Thomas graduated Cum Laude from the University of Mississippi in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in English. While an undergraduate, he was a member of Phi Beta Phi, the fraternity for university honor students. Thomas graduated from Baylor Law School in 1990 with a Juris Doctor degree and was a member of Phi Alpha Delta.

Since being licensed in 1990, Thomas has practiced law in Waco, Texas, focusing on Criminal Law.  Thomas served for over 9 years as as Misdemeanor Chief and Felony Prosecutor for McLennan County District Attorney before joining Dunnam & Dunnam in 2000.

Thomas is licensed to practice before the Supreme Court of Texas and all Texas court.  He is admitted to practice before the U. S. Court of Appeals (Fifth Circuit) and the U.S. District Court (Western District of Texas).  He is a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, the McLennan County Defense Lawyers Association, and the Waco-McLennan County Bar Association. He has been repeatedly named in the annual Texas Super Lawyers magazine.  In 2013, Thomas became a Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation.  Fellowship in the Foundation is limited to 1/3 of 1% of licensed attorneys.

In his practice, Thomas C. West has handled thousands of hearings and tried more than one hundred jury trials in federal and state courts in Waco, Texas, McLennan County, and surrounding counties involving, among other things:
